The Next Ride: Sunday 12 July 2015 – Urban to Rural Peregrination

Meet at the Velo café on the west side of the Brighton Level from 10.00 for a 10.15 start.

Details: distance 25 miles. Duration 5 hours 30 minutes including lunch and a tea break.

Trains: London Victoria to Brighton:  Depart at 09.06.  Arrive Bt’n 10.03

Shoreham to Brighton:  These times past each hour: 03 33 38 48.

Please note: This ride will be noisy between Patcham and Pyecombe due to fast traffic passing on the nearby A23. Also there are undulations between Pyecombe and Upper Beading, some quite long. And on Coombes road between Bramber and Shoreham. Mostly the remainder is quite flat.

The ride route: We will exit Brighton by a route some may not know avoiding  the traffic by crossing the London road at the end of Oxford Street and taking a right turn at St Bartholomew’s church onto the NCN route 20 then heading north, passing Preston Park, Withdean Park and Patcham.

At the main road junction with the A27 we will turn left and head up Mill Lane for 100 metres before turning right, passing under the A27 and heading north again to reach the NCN route 20 cycleway alongside the A23 (a dedicated  off road section) until reaching Pyecombe,  where we join West road (A281) for about a kilometre.

At reaching the roundabout ahead, we will go straight on to Poynings road and Fulking road where we pass the Royal Oak PH on the right. Continuing ahead to Edburton and the ‘T’ junction with the Henfield road, turn left.

After 100 metres on our right is a small turning leading to an off-road section (not suitable for ultra-thin tyres) this leads out onto Smugglers lane Upper Beading. Note, an alternative is possible, if you wish to keep on the Henfield road to avoid the track, we can meet up at the Rising Sun PH at the junction ahead, but this road is fast and busy and will need extra care.

Those using the track will enjoy the peace of the countryside that leads onto Pound lane and Hyde lane via Smugglers lane Upper Beading before reaching the lunch stop at the Rising Sun PH.

After lunch we head west to Bramber and join the Downs Link south to the Shoreham Toll Bridge either on or off road, it’s your choice.

Crossing the Shoreham Toll Bridge and heading east we enter Upper Shoreham road for only 50 metres before turning right into Connaught Avenue that leads directly to Shoreham station where some may wish to end their ride and get a train back to Brighton.

For those choosing to stay with the ride, we head east on CNC route 2 through the back streets of Shoreham to the lock gates and Carat’s café for refreshments. Then back to Brighton via route 2 to the Palace Pier where the ride ends.

If any of our London members intend to join the ride, please note:

From Brighton station, exit the station via the boardwalk to your left as you come through the ticket barrier. Follow the exit road to a mini roundabout and go right. At the next mini roundabout go right again. At the ‘T’ Junction turn right and follow round LH bend to traffic lights, turn left and follow round to the right downhill to pass St Bartholomew’s church and cross over the London road at the crossing ahead. Oxford Street is to your left. Go to the far end of Oxford Street and keep right. Cross the Ditchling road at the crossing and the Level is directly ahead. The Velo café is now ahead and to your right.
